New Construction and Refit

Refit As An Alternative To Construction

Only at first glance do the two options appear to be diametrically opposed. The common denominator lies in the Owner's desire for a yacht that corresponds to his personal requirements and vision. Both a new construction and a refit are a possibility when it comes to making this wish come true. Just which alternative to choose depends on a number of factors and cannot simply be put down to financial considerations.

For example, the current market situation and the time schedule of the chosen boatyards must enter into the equation. New construction clients nowadays have to demonstrate a great deal of patience if they want to bridge the sometimes three to five years’ waiting time before delivery of their new yacht. It therefore makes perfect sense to weigh up the pros and cons of having your own yacht refitted – something that can be realised in the short term - or of buying a top-class second-hand yacht and converting it to suit your needs.

In some cases, an owner has fallen in love with a particular type or a particular yacht, the production of which, however, goes back twenty years or more. A new construction or reconstruction is financially out of all proportion, or the yacht would have to be largely constructed from scratch and adapted to today’s production methods. In such cases, a refit is the only feasible alternative, even if the extent of work may sometimes be akin to that of a new construction.
