The International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (ISM Code) addresses the responsibilities of the people who manage and operate ships and provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.
The application of the ISM Code should support and encourage the development of a safety culture in shipping. Success factors for such development include: commitment, values and beliefs. The Code establishes safety-management objectives and requires a Safety Management System (SMS) to be implemented on board and at the management company which assumes responsibility for operating the ship.
The ISM Code also requires every vessel over 500 GRT (gross tonnage) to be issued with a SMC (Safety Management Certificate), which verifies that the company and its shipboard management operate in accordance with the approved safety management system.
Every company is expected “to designate a person or persons ashore having direct access to the highest level of management”.
The procedures required by the Code should be documented and compiled in a Safety Management Manual, a copy of which should be kept on board.
We have been awarded a DOC (document of compliance) certifying that we fully comply with the requirements set by the International Safety Management (ISM) Code for the management and operation of commercial vessels.
We will arrange for initial and annual audits of vessels to be carried out in accordance with the ISM code.
We are then required to establish and implement a policy for achieving these objectives. This includes providing the necessary resources and shore-based support.
