yacht profile and choice of designers

We usually do not suggest to start a project with the discussion with a particular naval architect only. Most of the architects have developed a certain style during their career (e.g. planing/displacement, traditional/modern, etc.) and are, in a way, limited by their own success.

The commencement of the project should be an extensive discussion of the wishes and goals of the future Owner. These should be discussed uninfluenced by any parties hoping to contract a job (naval architects, yards, etc.). In this phase the "ideal" specification, the perfect profile, of the yacht should be written - possibly with some input of a Captain, if he is a long-standing employee and knows the cruising and yachting habits of the Owner very well.

Based on this profile, OCEAN Independence will recommend various architects and designers, which could be suitable for that type of yacht. Obviously many Owners have their own preferences and already know some designer work which they like.

OCEAN Independence accompanies the Client in the meetings with those designers and assists in the final choice, as well in the contract negotiations with the designer chosen.

OCEAN Independence monitors the correspondence of the preliminary designs with the wishes of the Client. The same applies to the building specification which is often prepared at the same time.

OCEAN Independence monitor and supervise the performance of the designer. Once a preliminary design has been accepted by the Client, OCEAN Independence will take care that a proper documentation is prepared for obtaining tenders from various yards (line plan, construction plan, building specification, etc.)

Remark: We are of the opinion, and have been so since 1985, that a mega yacht should always have an official classification. If ever possible she should also be commercially registered. Both issues are of great importance in the daily operation, even on a private yacht - and unavoidable on a charter yacht cruising in the Mediterranean. It can make a vast difference when the time of a sale has come!
