Articles An Intimate Conversation with History: KALIZMA for Charter, A Story on the Sea

"This yacht is a tale of survival, and timeless romance," Shirish, the current owner of the legendary KALIZMA, shared with us in an exclusive interview. "It's not just about luxury; it's about the soul of a vessel that has weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical."

These words truly encapsulate the essence of KALIZMA, a yacht that transcends the realm of opulence and invites you to partake in a living, breathing chapter of maritime history. Ocean Independence is thrilled to present KALIZMA for charter, an opportunity to immerse yourself in a narrative woven from wartime resilience, Hollywood romance, and the enduring allure of the open sea.

A Tapestry of Time: KALIZMA’s Storied Past

KALIZMA’s origins trace back to a world in turmoil. Built in 1906 as a steam yacht, she was originally commissioned for private use but soon requisitioned for service during World War I. This baptism by fire infused her with a spirit of resilience that would define her future voyages. Imagine the scenes played out on her decks during those turbulent times, the silent witness to history unfolding. This early chapter laid the groundwork for a life of adventure and intrigue.

Following the war, KALIZMA transitioned back to private ownership, embarking on a period of elegant cruising. However, it was her acquisition by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in the 1960s that catapulted her into the realm of legend. The golden couple, whose love affair captivated the world, transformed KALIZMA into a floating sanctuary, a haven from the relentless glare of the paparazzi. They christened her “KALIZMA,” a fusion of their daughters’ names, Kate, Liza, and Maria.

During their ownership, KALIZMA became a stage for their passionate romance, hosting intimate gatherings with fellow luminaries providing a backdrop for some of their most cherished moments. It wasn’t just about private getaways; KALIZMA became a floating home away from home, a place where the Burtons entertained a who’s who of Hollywood and international society, such as Clint Eastwood and Brad Pitt. The yacht became synonymous with glamour and extravagance, a symbol of a bygone era when Hollywood royalty reigned supreme. The very air on board seems to whisper tales of their escapades, their laughter, and their love.

But KALIZMA’s story doesn’t end with the Burtons. She continued to navigate the world’s oceans, changing hands and weathering the tests of time. Shirish, her current custodian, recognised the unique character of this vessel, a character forged in the crucible of history. “When I first saw her,” he recalls, “I felt a connection, a sense of responsibility to preserve her legacy.”

In addition to a painstaking but lovingly intricate refit process, bringing KALIZMA back to life has not been without its tribulations. Thankfully, with a birth story such as hers, the yacht, and Shirish, took all challenges in their stride. He recounted the time of “taking 400 bullets” during a pirate attack coming through the Suez canal, and the subsequent further works required in Montenegro and Malta. He also explained that they were thankfully the last boat out of Sri Lanka before the revolution and martial law in 2022. This turbulent history is a testament to the yacht’s ability to survive.

A Labour of Love: Reviving a Maritime Icon

Shirish’s commitment to restoring KALIZMA has been a labour of love, a meticulous undertaking that has spanned years. The refit, carried out with an unwavering attention to detail, has sought to preserve the yacht’s authentic character while enhancing her comfort and functionality. “We wanted to honour her past,” Shirish explains, “but also to build on it. Every decision, every detail, has been carefully considered.”

The refit and revival has updated the interiors to make them much lighter than they were before, making it feel bigger and more refined. Currently, the top deck is being reconfigured in Malta, with the Jacuzzi and seating area being replaced by a bar and 14-person lounge. These design choices, as Shirish emphasises, are driven by a desire to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for families, reflecting his own experiences as a yacht Owner and charterer for many years. He also said that the majority of the design choices were made as a result of his family-time on board, meaning they are very well thought out and lived in, and therefore very appealing to other families and modern-day charterers.

The extensive use of brass, a defining feature of KALIZMA’s original design, has been painstakingly restored, a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. “The brass is a challenge to maintain,” Shirish admits, “but it’s an essential part of her charm. It’s a reminder of her heritage.”

A Unique Charter Experience: Where History Meets Luxury

A charter aboard KALIZMA is an invitation to embark on a voyage unlike any other. It’s a chance to step into a world where history and luxury intertwine, where every moment is infused with a sense of timeless elegance. “This yacht is not for everyone,” Shirish acknowledges. “If you’re looking for a sleek, modern vessel with all the latest gadgets, you might be disappointed. But if you’re seeking a yacht with soul, with character, with a story to tell, then KALIZMA is for you.”

The spacious decks provide ample room for relaxation and entertainment, while the elegant interiors offer a haven of comfort and tranquillity. Imagine yourself sipping cocktails on the aft deck, watching the sun set over the horizon, or dining al fresco under a canopy of stars. The crew have been handpicked for their expertise and dedication, and will ensure that your every need is met with impeccable service.

“This yacht is designed for creating memories,” Shirish says. “It’s a place where families can come together, where friends can reconnect, where life’s special moments can be celebrated in style. The yacht is at home in the Med with its history, but also in the Indian sea because of its design. It’s not just a big super modern steel structure.”

Safety and Security: A Paramount Concern

Shirish, with his family often on board, knows the importance of safety, which has been a top priority for the refit. He understands the importance of providing a secure and reliable environment for his guests. “Safety is non-negotiable,” he asserts. “We’ve invested heavily in ensuring that KALIZMA meets the highest standards of safety and security.”

KALIZMA is RINA certified, a testament to her adherence to rigorous safety regulations. She is, in fact, the oldest yacht to receive this certification, a remarkable achievement that underscores her exceptional condition.

KALIZMA at the Cannes Film Festival: A Star Returns to the Spotlight

This year, KALIZMA will grace the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, a fitting stage for a yacht with such a rich cinematic history. Her presence at the festival is a testament to her enduring allure and her ability to captivate audiences from around the world. “KALIZMA belongs at Cannes,” Shirish says. “She’s a star in her own right.” Given her history, she is sure to be the most appropriate yacht there, and now available for charter during the event.
