Articles Meet The Team: Charlie Comport

From our Sussex office, Charter Consultant Charlie Comport reflects on a career that has already taken him from life on board some remarkable yachts to creating highly personalised charter experiences for clients around the globe.

Whether coordinating complex itineraries, helping honeymooners charter around the world or stepping aboard some of the industry’s most iconic yachts for the very first time, Charlie has experienced first-hand the variety and adventure that makes the yachting industry so unique.

Having grown up around yachting, he began his career at sea as a deckhand before progressing to lead deckhand, gaining invaluable insight into the level of detail required to deliver exceptional service on board. Combined with a background in Business Management and Marketing, Charlie brings a thoughtful and well-rounded perspective to the charter world, balancing operational expertise with a genuine passion for creating unforgettable experiences.

In this interview, Charlie discusses his career so far, the realities of life behind the scenes in yacht charter, and some of the extraordinary experiences and destinations that continue to fuel his passion for the industry.

OI: Can you tell us a little about your journey into the yachting industry and what first attracted you to it?

After finishing school, working on board yachts felt like a natural progression for me. What initially attracted me to the industry was the unpredictability of it all; no two days, guests or destinations were ever the same, and there was always the sense that something extraordinary could happen at any moment.

My time at sea gave me a strong understanding of crew operations, guest experience and the wider dynamics of the industry as a whole. Working aboard some incredibly unique yachts also gave me a real appreciation for the professionalism and adaptability that goes into creating exceptional experiences on board.

Through this, I realised that a land-based role within the charter sector was the ideal fit for me, combining the operational side of yachting with the client-facing element that I have always particularly enjoyed.

OI: Your background combines hands-on yacht experience with Business Management & Marketing studies. How do those two worlds complement each other in your role today?

My time working on board gave me a practical understanding of what defines an exceptional charter experience, from the operational detail behind the scenes to the level of service clients expect on board. It also taught me the importance of adaptability, discretion and anticipating people’s needs before they are asked.

Studying Business Management and Marketing strengthened my understanding of client relationships and communication. It also made me appreciate that the way a yacht is presented, from the crew dynamic to the cuisine and atmosphere on board, is a form of marketing in itself, creating experiences that clients remember and want to return to again and again.

OI: You’ve worked aboard some incredible yachts,  what’s one experience that really stands out?

Of all the experiences I have had on board, the one that stands out most is my very first day joining sailing yacht, A. Arriving by tender and getting my first close-up view of the world’s largest private sailing yacht was a moment I will never forget.

The scale of the vessel became more impressive the closer we got, and stepping on board for the first time gave me a real sense of the level of detail, innovation and professionalism that exists within this industry. The interior volume and remarkable art collection were also unlike anything I had experienced before and remain something I will never forget.

OI: What would people be surprised to learn goes on behind the scenes when creating a seamless charter experience?

Without a doubt, the level of contingency planning involved behind the scenes. For almost every aspect of a charter, there are often multiple back-up plans in place, whether that relates to guest transfers, weather routing, berth availability or changes to the itinerary itself.

A great deal of time is spent coordinating these details alongside the yacht crew so that plans can adapt seamlessly in real time if needed. In many cases, the clients remain entirely unaware that anything has changed at all, which is often the clearest sign that everything is working exactly as it should.

OI: You’ve been involved in some highly complex itineraries, including a honeymoon trip around the world. What’s the most memorable or unusual request you’ve ever helped coordinate?

One recent request that certainly stood out involved sourcing a stuffed beaver for the recreation of a scene from the film: The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!. The piece had to be specially made in South Africa before being transported by the production team all the way to the Maldives.

It was definitely not an everyday request, but it perfectly reflected the creativity and logistical detail that can often sit behind seemingly small elements of a client experience.

OI: Having spent time on board as crew, how does that operational understanding benefit your clients?

I think my operational understanding helps clients feel far more comfortable and informed throughout the charter process, particularly those who are new to yachting. I am able to explain how life on board really works, from the role of the crew to the level of flexibility and personalisation available during a charter.

It also allows me to reassure clients that the experience is entirely tailored around how they want to enjoy their time on board, with the crew constantly adapting behind the scenes to create something that feels seamless, relaxed and completely personal to them.

OI: The yachting industry is all about extraordinary experiences, do you have a favourite destination?

One of the most memorable destinations I have had the opportunity to visit was Svalbard. The Arctic cruising grounds are truly unique, offering the chance to witness the Northern Lights alongside some of the most dramatic landscapes I have ever seen. The abundance of wildlife was also incredible, from polar bears to beluga whales, and it is one of the few places I have visited that feels genuinely untouched and remote.

OI: What’s your favourite part of working in the yachting industry, and what keeps you passionate about your career?

It may sound cliché, but the constant unpredictability of it and never quite knowing where a day may lead. No two clients, itineraries or experiences are ever the same, which keeps the role both exciting and rewarding. Being surrounded by individuals with such varied backgrounds, experiences and expertise is something that continually keeps me passionate about the career.

OI: When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending as much time outdoors as possible with friends, whether that is playing sports, fishing or travelling somewhere new. I have always enjoyed exploring different cultures and experiencing local food.

OI: Finally, what advice would you give to someone considering their very first yacht charter?

My advice would be not to feel confined to the more traditional yachting destinations straight away. Instead, focus first on the type of experience you want from the charter itself, whether that is heli-skiing, wildlife encounters, complete relaxation or something far more adventure-led.

Connecting clients with these kinds of remote, experience-led destinations is very much Charlie’s speciality, particularly in parts of the world that many people would never initially associate with yachting. From there, the right yacht can be positioned almost anywhere in the world, often opening the door to some incredibly remote and beautiful destinations.
