OI: What first inspired you to pursue a career in the luxury yachting industry?
Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, I wasn’t surrounded by water, so boating and yachting weren’t a part of my early life. Unlike many in this industry, my childhood revolved more around sports than the marine world.
After earning my college degree in 2020, my wife and I moved to South Florida. Initially, I set my sights on a career in the sports industry, given my background. However, through a chance connection in the marine industry, I found myself selling smaller boats. What started as just a job quickly turned into a promising career as I immersed myself in the industry and discovered a true passion for yachting.
Over the past five years, my enthusiasm for both yachting and working with people has only grown. I’m always looking for opportunities to learn, evolve, and expand my expertise in this industry. Yachting isn’t just a career for me—it’s a passion, and I’m here to stay.
OI: What is your favourite part of your job?
One of the things I love most about the yachting industry is the opportunity to connect with a wide range of people. Whether it’s like-minded individuals who share my passion or those from completely different backgrounds, careers, and lifestyles, yachting has a unique way of bringing people together. No matter where someone comes from, there’s a shared excitement for being on the water, exploring new destinations, and embracing the luxury and adventure that yachting offers.
What makes this industry truly special is the incredible stories people bring with them. I’m constantly inspired by the journeys that have led them to where they are today—whether they’ve built successful businesses, travelled the world, or pursued unique passions. Yachting serves as a common ground where these diverse experiences come together, creating meaningful connections and lasting relationships. Being part of this dynamic community is something I genuinely appreciate and look forward to every day.
OI: What would you say is the most challenging aspect of your job?
One of the biggest challenges in the marine industry, especially when starting out, is building the right connections. Success in this field isn’t instant—it takes time, dedication, and a willingness to put in the effort to grow. Relationships are at the heart of this industry, and establishing trust with clients, colleagues, and mentors doesn’t happen overnight. It requires long hours, persistence, and the ability to learn from those with more experience. Being open to feedback and continuously expanding my knowledge has been crucial in navigating the early stages of my career.
Very few people step into the marine industry and find immediate success. It’s a business built on hard work, consistency, and, most importantly, genuine passion. To truly thrive, you have to love what you do and have a sincere desire to help and connect with people. Whether it’s assisting clients in finding their perfect yacht or learning the intricacies of the market, success comes from a combination of expertise, integrity, and dedication. While the challenges are real, the rewards—both professionally and personally—make every bit of effort worthwhile.
OI: What have been some of the most significant achievements and highlights in your career so far?
Many of my most significant career achievements revolve around rapid growth and consistency in the yachting industry. I started with little knowledge of the field but quickly advanced within my previous company, becoming a trusted yacht expert. Fortunately, I entered the industry during the COVID boom, which provided a unique opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow at an accelerated pace. Coupled with the support of experienced mentors and a strong network, I was able to develop the skills and expertise that have brought me to my current position with Ocean Independence.
While professional growth and success are rewarding, they pale in comparison to the relationships I’ve built along the way. Many of my clients have become more than just business connections—they’ve become friends. For me, yachting isn’t just about transactions; it’s about creating lasting relationships and sharing in the excitement and passion that make this industry so special.
OI: What trends do you currently see emerging in yacht sales?
The yachting industry is evolving with a strong focus on sustainability, technology, and experience-driven travel. Eco-friendly innovations such as solar panels, and sustainable materials are becoming more common, while yachts designed for remote destinations are growing in popularity. Many yachting companies are also prioritising sustainability initiatives, and partnerships with marine conservation organisations. Wellness-focused designs, featuring spas, fitness centres, and personalised health programs, are also reshaping luxury on the water.
Advancements in technology are revolutionising yacht design and operation. AI-driven navigation systems, automated maintenance monitoring, and remote management apps are making yachts more efficient and user-friendly. Smart interiors now feature voice-controlled lighting, climate control, and entertainment systems, while augmented reality interfaces enhance onboard experiences. These innovations not only improve convenience but also optimise performance, ensuring that yachting remains at the forefront of luxury and innovation.
OI: What is one thing that has surprised you about working in the yachting industry?
One thing that has truly surprised me about the yachting industry is how small and interconnected it is. Since joining Ocean Independence, I’ve noticed just how tight-knit this community is—everyone seems to know everyone. Whether it’s brokers, captains, shipbuilders, or clients, the industry thrives on strong relationships and mutual trust. Word travels fast, and reputation is everything, making integrity and professionalism essential for long-term success.
This close-knit nature also creates a unique sense of camaraderie. Rather than just being a competitive industry, there’s a shared understanding that growth comes from working together. Experienced professionals are often willing to mentor newcomers, and collaboration between companies is common. It’s a small world, and the best way to succeed is by building genuine relationships and contributing to the industry as a whole.
OI: If you had to give one piece of advice to somebody hoping to enter the yachting industry what would it be?
Building strong relationships within the yachting industry is essential, as opportunities often come from unexpected connections. Many professionals find their way into the marine world through someone they know or have met along the way. Because this industry is so relationship-driven, networking and surrounding yourself with the right people can open doors to new opportunities. Finding the right company and environment that aligns with your goals is just as important as the job itself. Success often comes from being proactive, putting yourself in the right circles, and staying open to new possibilities.
Equally important is the willingness to learn and be mentored. The yachting industry is filled with highly experienced professionals who are eager to share their knowledge with the next generation. Those who thrive are the ones who take the time to listen, absorb information, and continuously refine their skills. Learning from peers, seeking guidance from mentors, and staying adaptable are all key to long-term success. In such a dynamic and evolving industry, the ability to grow alongside it is what truly sets individuals apart.
OI: Can you tell us about some of your hobbies and interests outside of the office?
Outside of work, I love spending time with my wife and our Doberman, Zara. Staying active and being outdoors has become a growing passion of mine, whether it’s going for a walk, or simply enjoying the Florida sunshine. Golf is another hobby I enjoy, offering both a challenge and a great way to unwind. I also value the friendships I’ve maintained since elementary school, and I make it a priority to stay connected with the people who have been part of my journey for years.
Sports have always been a big part of my life, and since moving to Fort Lauderdale, my passion for them has only grown. I’m a lifelong Cincinnati Bengals fan, and over the years, I’ve developed a strong appreciation for hockey as well. Since relocating to South Florida, I’ve become an avid Florida Panthers supporter, embracing the fast-paced excitement of the sport. Whether it’s catching a game, playing a round of golf, or spending time with family and friends, I’m always looking for ways to stay active and engaged outside of the office.
