After 15 years with Ocean Independence, Marina Schmid’s name is synonymous with versatility and dedication. Having worked across nearly every aspect of the business, she brings a depth of experience that few can match.
“I started in 2010 as an Administrative Assistant,” recalls Marina. “Back then, there were just 58 people in the company. It’s grown significantly since, I’ve seen a lot of change, and a lot of people come and go.”
Her first role was assisting the Sales Manager in Zurich, handling general office tasks and travel arrangements for the CEO, Peter Hürzeler. It wasn’t long before she became involved in yacht show logistics. “I was working as a runner, welcoming clients at the entrance, organising specs, preparing various lists. When someone left just before the Monaco Yacht Show, I stepped in to help organise the entire event. It was a lot of fun and a great learning experience.”
In 2016, Marina took on the role of Executive Assistant to the CEO, adding more responsibilities. “That included assisting Peter with sales and purchase matters, board operations and organising yacht shows like Monaco, Dubai and MYBA. I worked with the marketing team, coordinating the show from A-Z, including seminars, cars and tenders. It was a busy time but incredibly rewarding.”
Gradually, Marina transitioned into charter consultancy. “Peter always had clients looking to charter I assisted him with all of his work. It was learning by doing alongside Peter and the help of experienced colleagues around the company.”
“Peter asks me this question from time to time,” she laughs. “I really enjoy the variety. Coordinating yacht shows was particularly rewarding because I got to connect with people across the business who I wouldn’t otherwise speak with. Those moments, especially dinners after a busy day at the show, were really enjoyable.” She continues, “I really like working for Peter and with Peter, I somehow cannot picture my life without it.” She says. “I also really enjoy working on exotic yacht charter requests.”
Today, Marina thrives in her role as a charter consultant. “I have really nice clients, and while it can be busy at times, it’s always fun. I think the mix of tasks is what I like most.”
“I saw the job advertisement and thought the industry looked interesting,” she says. “In Switzerland we don’t have superyachts, just smaller boats, so I didn’t know much about it. But the job description appealed to me and the industry turned out to be fascinating. I love it. To me, there’s no better business that has a nicer product.”
“Working for Peter for over 15 years has been incredible, I really appreciate how much he trusts me”, she says. Continuing, “The first Monaco Yacht Show I organised on my own was definitely a challenge,” says Marina. “There was a lot of money invested in just four days and everything had to be perfect. It was also one of my biggest achievements.”
Another standout project was managing a refit for a large yacht. “I worked closely with the shipyard and the Client. It was tough, but I learned so much about yacht management and project coordination.”
Client satisfaction also stands out. “The positive feedback I receive as a charter consultant really makes me happy. Knowing that a client had a great time is very rewarding.”
Marina has a strong sense of adventure and appreciation for nature. “Tanzania during the pandemic was unforgettable. There were no crowds and so many animals. It was amazing.”
She also highlights a month-long trip across the United States. “California, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, every day was a highlight. We still talk about that trip often.”
“I love Northern Europe as well,” she adds. “Sweden and Norway are stunning. The wildlife, the scenery, it’s all so beautiful. Next on my list is Canada. It looks breathtaking.”
“I love hiking, mountain biking and spending time in nature with friends and family. Being outside is really important to me,” says Marina. “Travelling, of course, is a big passion, but I also love being a mother.”
She also finds peace close to home. “Lake Zug is beautiful. I grew up on the lake and even though I’m used to it, it’s still great to have it nearby.”
So, what has kept Marina at Ocean Independence for 15 years? “I love working for Peter. He’s a fantastic mentor. And I really enjoy the people and the variety in the work.”
