Articles Ocean Independence and Amels: Celebrating a History of Quality and Innovation in New Build Yachts

We look back at the long as successful yacht building relationship between Ocean Independence and the Amels shipyard with some top yacht construction highlights.

Working together since 2006, the relationship between Ocean Independence and the Amels shipyard continues to go from strength to strength. Prestigious and renowned for top quality service, Dutch yard Amels create yachts with a proven technical platform while maximising options for customisation. Having successfully overseen the construction of an impressive seven Amels superyachts, incorporating full client liaison build management, Ocean Independence have additionally sold four pre-owned Amels yachts within this time. With the combination of skills, knowledge and expertise from both brands, owners know that their entire experience from contract to launch will be decidedly positive, whether refitting, building or selling an Amels yacht. Looking back over the numerous new build Amels projects that Ocean Independence has been involved in, a few certainly have some noteworthy stories to tell.

NOMAD

From the Limited Editions 180 series, the build of 55m superyacht NOMAD was project managed by Ocean Independence with subsequent ongoing operational yacht management. Designed in collaboration with Tim Heywood and Amels, the Owner opted for a very striking and specific blue and anthracite grey superstructure that served to emphasise the long lines of the bridge and the 190m2 sun deck.  The Owner made a personal choice to have custom interiors designed by the California-based boutique residential studio, Bonesteel Trout Hall, who worked in direct collaboration with the Amels in-house interior team to great success. This exceptional yacht has become a firm family favourite, cruising extensively in the Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean alongside a sizeable chase boat. Heavy private use by the Owner and family has seen them enjoy plenty of fishing and watersports, making great use of their yacht to create fantastic memories.

ENGLEBERG

Featuring a distinctive grey hull with an orange highlight just above the waterline, 55m Amels yacht ENGELBERG was launched in 2013. Ocean Independence introduced the yacht’s Owner to Amels on the basis that he wanted to build new motor yacht without a long wait. Familiar with the shipyard’s reliably high-quality work and ability to build a yacht with significant customisation in a relatively short period of time, we knew that Amels was an easy choice. The stern beach club with sauna and steam room, customised foldout bathing platform and main side deck balconies were just a few of the bespoke features resulting from this build. Thanks to renowned Zurich-based landscape architect, Enzo Enea, who completed the interior design and décor on board, the yacht also features an ingenious connection between interior and exterior. Maximising space by ensuring a good flow, combined with a wonderful supply of natural light, the design establishes an innate sense of bringing the outside in. Highly personalised touches, extensive security features and one-off pieces have made ENGELBERG a true standout from the Amels yard. Loved and used with delight by her Owner and family, it is clear to see why the Limited Editions concept has worked so well. Without endless meetings or technical, financial and delivery time risks, this concept is a highly appealing opportunity for those demanding quality and individuality without the wait.
