First, fully explore the island’s cultural centre and capital, Kos Town. The harbour at Kos Town is dominated by the imposing Knights of St. John castle. The mixture of medieval Frankish and Turkish architecture, and elegant Italian-built public buildings, is best seen from the water.
Whitewashed houses and old winding streets are lined with romantic restaurants, boutique hotels and promenades.. In the centre of Kos visit Europe’s oldest plane tree, marking the spot where Hippocrates supposedly taught his students under its shade.
The town comes into its own at night when the atmosphere picks up an almost carnival-like vibe until dawn. If nightclubs are not your scene, this small area is easily avoided.
Clear water here is ripe for swimming, diving and snorkelling, there are a lot of natural and cultural sites on offer as well. And, of course, there’s sailing:for more than 100 years, the beautiful old marina of Kos has drawn sailors and yachting enthusiasts.
