Spetses: Sunblushed simplicity & exhilarating views

The island of Spetses is part of the Saronic Islands archipelago. Along with Hydra and Poros, Spetses played a defining role in the Greek war of independence in the early 1800s. With only the small, eponymous town of Spetses and several uninhabited little islands surrounding it, Spetses is an ideal destination for those seeking peace and isolation on their yacht charter in order to regroup with family and friends without the rush and stress of modern life encroaching. Its proximity to Athens makes this an easy escape from the Greek capital.

A nearly complete absence of cars – save for taxis and public transport – means that the four-mile-long island remains a 19th-century outpost, with horse-drawn carriages and wooden caciques adding to the sense of old-world charm. With more than 30km of trails, there is an abundance of excellent hiking territory, offering fantastic views and exhilarating sights. Once you have explored on foot, spend some time in town, around the main Dapia Harbour, where ferries arrive and yachts moor, as well as adjacent Plateia Limenarhiou, lined with chic boutiques, bars and cafés. The water calls for water sports. Try windsurfing, waterskiing, scuba diving and snorkelling in the refreshingly clean and clear waters.
