The Exumas: Conch Fritter & Thunderball Cave

Only about 35 miles to the southeast from Nassau, the enticing Exumas are a vast archipelago of the 365 cays and islands, subdivided into the Exuma Cays, Little Exuma and Great Exuma. The Exuma Cays are one of the most coveted sailing destinations in the world, due to the beautiful cruising grounds they offer as well as numerous exclusive and private islands, where luxurious resorts are designed with relaxation in mind. Many of the private islands can be rented to offer a shore base for your trip. Staniel Cay is perhaps the best known: a gathering point for visiting yachts, the Yacht Club is a great lunch spot – order the cracked conch at the grill – while nearby Thunderball Cave, which has starred in the James Bond is the place to snorkel in clear waters surrounded by colourful, exotic fish.

The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, which stretches 176 square-miles is a protected habitat for a number of endangered and rare species. For more hedonistic pleasures, head for the capital, Georgetown. Here you will find a fine harbour, luxurious hotels, and vibrant bars in which to drink local rum and dance the night away. Great Exuma blends natural beauty with every amenity you could wish for, and yet privacy and relaxation are still key.
