Epidavros: Anecdote

The god of medicine, Asklepios, whose temple is near the theatre of Epidavros, is symbolised by a staff and a serpent. Healing methods in the temple were apparently far from conventional. Prior to bedtime, the sick would be purified in waters from a sacred spring and when they slept they would meet gods in their subconscious who suggested remedies. Harmless snakes are believed to have been kept in the building and released at night to “lick” the afflicted with their, rumoured to be, divinely curative forked tongues.

Nafplio: Folklore

The son of sea god Poseidon was Nauplius; renowned as an expert seafarer, the first capital of the Modern Greek state was named after him – Nafplio. Taking the same name, his great-great-grandson Nauplius in turn ruled the city and was one of the Argonauts. Legend has it that, seeking justice for the murder of his son, as Greek ships sailed home at the close of the Trojan War, Nauplius lit false beacons along the perilous coastline luring them to shore and resulting in shipwrecks on the rocks.

Spetses: Culture

One of the most famous heroes of the Greek Revolution in Spetses was the female captain, Lascarina Bouboulina. Taking command of her murdered husband’s fleet, she was an active member of the Filiki Etairia, a secret organisation plotting the revolt. Also a great business woman, she paid over her fortune amassed from two husbands, to finance the war: indeed she built the famous ship Agamemnon, equipped with 18 cannons, the largest vessel used in the War of Independence. Many streets in Greece are named after her today as a mark of the esteem she is held in.
