FREDDY Captain Nominated For ACREW Award
19 May 2022
Ocean Independence is pleased to announce that the Captain of Ocean Independence charter yacht FREDDY, Kelly Gordon, has been nominated for ACREW's Captain (Master 500GT) Crew Award, recognising the achievements of a Captain who has experience of working closely with crew. The assessment criteria includes leadership qualities, team and guest orientation, communication and budgeting. FREDDY is a firm favourite amongst Ocean Independence charterers in Florida and the Bahamas and is run by an outstanding crew under the watchful eye of experienced Captain Kelly.
Kelly has enjoyed a career like no other. Raised on a farm in Indiana, she first came into contact with the sea when she went to college near Beaufort, North Carolina. She later graduated with a degree in chemistry and began working as a chemistry professor at a junior college. So when she was invited to a party on a yacht one day during her first year of teaching, she was intrigued by the similarities between the mechanics of tractors she had operated at home and boats, and felt so comfortable on a boat that it didn't take long for her to realise she had stumbled upon exactly what could be the greatest passion of her life; becoming a yacht Captain. So she decided to quit her job and work in the maritime industry. Today, 13 years later and with a successful career as a superyacht Captain, Kelly is an example of women paving the way for inclusion in a world where only 2% of yacht captains are female.
