Wayne Whitby
Technical Fleet Manager
Wayne Whitby was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, where he studied engineering from an early age working with his father. After completing a four-year apprenticeship in plant and heavy machinery mechanics and heavy vehicle mechanics, Wayne had a change of career path and moved into shore-based marine engineering on board various vessels where he carried out all aspects of maintenance, repairs and refits for over seven years. Wayne was then offered an opportunity as Chief Engineer on board, a career which he continued for over 20 years, running vessels of varying sizes. During his time as Chief Engineer, Wayne has been involved with training second engineers, organising and completing shipyard periods/refits and completing several new constructions. He continued to keep up to date with new technologies and regulations, whilst advancing to Chief Engineer 9000Kw 3000GT in the superyacht industry.
Wayne is formally trained in many aspects of the yacht engineering, giving him a very good working knowledge of most systems used in modern yachts. He has cruised predominately in the Mediterranean and east coast of Australia, and has also carried out deliveries from the Philippines to the Mediterranean and Cuba. Wayne’s experience in managing many different vessels as Chief Engineer, along with his previous work as a Technical Manager, allows him to bring an intimate operational knowledge and apply a practical approach to resolve technical issues on board. Now as part of the yacht management team at Ocean Independence, Wayne is using his comprehensive knowledge to manage the technical side of the yachts under management.
