Members only: The Perini Navi Cup
Coming around just once every three years, the Perini Navi Cup in Porto Cervo is the ultimate gathering of Perini owners and their yachts.
Every three years, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) on Sardinia’s north-east coast welcomes a bevy of sailing yachts for what is arguably the world’s most exclusive regatta: the Perini Navi Cup.
This invitation-only event, established in 2004, is reserved for Perini Navi yachts and their owners, and is as much a celebration of the iconic Italian brand as it is a reunion for what is fondly known as the ‘Perini Family’. Perini owners, their crews, employees and the actual Perini family gather together for four days of stylish social events and spectacular superyacht racing in the spirit of fun and friendly competition.
The 2018 edition will take place from 19th to 22nd September, with 20 yachts – 13 racing and seven spectating – set to attend. The entire event is always hosted by Porto Cervo’s YCCS. A hub of yachting developed by Prince Karim Aga Khan over half a century ago, it offers a beautiful backdrop for post-race soirées and sunset debriefs.
As always, the list of attending yachts promises to be a who’s who of Perini Navi’s back-catalogue – from 1987’s S/Y Elettra, the very first Perini, to 2017’s S/Y Seven, the yard’s most recent launch. And while the regatta is primarily about bonding between like-minded Perini owners and fans, winning races is certainly never far from anyone’s mind. Many owners add to their own crews with professional race crew, often made up from former America’s Cup sailors, in order to give them a real racing edge.
The three days of races take place in the sparkling waters around Porto Cervo, sweeping along its coastline and circumventing the craggy outcrops and baron islets. It is a challenging and breathtaking course. In the evenings, as the superyachts’ lofty masts are lit up against the darkening Porto Cervo sky, guests take part in yacht hops, cocktail contests and sunset parties, culminating in a prize giving ceremony and grand gala on the final night.
The Perini Navi Cup is the ultimate end-of-season opportunity for like-minded owners; owners who are members of a club that you can only join if you are lucky enough to own a yacht built by one of the most iconic brands in the world. The Cup is much like the Perini yachts themselves; stylish, performance-orientated yet luxuriously relaxed, and always embodying an undefinable ‘Italianess’ – charm, beauty, openness.
