In yachting, we are fortunate to be able to experience the very best our natural world has to offer, so we at Ocean Independence feel it is important that we protect our environment to the best of our ability.
As you cruise the ocean, indulge in the yachting experience and falling in love with new destinations can be done with complete peace of mind. By taking part in our dedicated Charter Carbon Offset Programme, you can rest assured that your next charter experience leaves as small a footprint as possible.
Through our partnership with ClimatePartner, you can counteract the effects of greenhouse gas emissions and, at the same time, improve the livelihood of people around the world.
The expected amount of greenhouse gas emissions from the fuel used during the charter will be calculated and this amount will be offset by investing in projects to reduce, avoid or remove carbon from the atmosphere. At the same time, these projects have other benefits – improving livelihoods, conserving biodiversity and contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
All of the projects selected by Ocean Independence from ClimatePartner are based on international standards and independently verified.
After the charter, you will receive a certificate detailing the amount of emissions which have been offset and the projects supported.
Simply speak with your Ocean Independence Broker when booking your dream yachting vacation, who will guide you through the steps. If you decide to offset the emissions from your charter, Ocean Independence will handle all the background administration with ClimatePartner. For you, it’s as simple as ticking a box.
The amount of contribution needed to offset your charter emissions depends on several factors, but mainly the length of charter and the fuel consumption of the particular yacht. As a rough guide, for a typical week-long charter, you can expect the total contribution to range from €2,000 – €8,000.
Clean drinking water. Stable local economies. Clean living environments. All things we can easily take for granted, yet many developing countries currently lack. By offsetting your carbon emissions, you will be helping to fund one of a selection of Carbon Offsetting Projects. Examples of these projects include:
By 2050, it’s predicted that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. With your contribution, you’ll be supporting ClimatePartner’s ‘money for plastic’ scheme, which allows waste collectors to exchange plastic waste for money, food, drinking water, or even school fees at dedicated Plastic Bank branches, helping to protect our oceans and strengthen developing communities.
Illegal charcoal made from trees in the Virunga National Park is a major energy source for the 97% of the population in the region who have no electricity. A 13.6 MW hydroelectric power plant aims to provide electricity for 30,000 inhabitants and has connected another 5,000 households to the power grid, promoting economic development and stability in the region.
In India, more than two million children die each year from cholera or typhoid fever, and only 32% of households have access to clean water. ClimatePartner’s scheme aims to chemically treat household water supplies so that clean drinking water is either delivered directly to people’s homes or is available at local village shops.
ClimatePartner’s Microenergy Credit project aims to support both the environment and local communities, by offering energy-efficient products at market price. With a focus on supporting local businesses, your contributions will help to provide entrepreneurs with start-up capital and training whilst also increasing accessibility to carbon-conscious goods.
