Insider guide
Mykonos
As a part of the Cyclades islands, Mykonos lies in the in the centre of the Aegean Sea and is a whitewashed paradise. Greek mythology and history collide with a cosmopolitan party scene, and you can enjoy the best of the island by chartering a yacht in Mykonos.
Allegedly the location of the great mythic battle between Zeus and the Titans, the island captures the heady allure of this fable. Traditional Cycladic architecture, whitewashed streets and pretty churches are beautifully preserved, as is the quaint harbour in the middle of a wide bay – the perfect place from which to embark on your charter. If you want to hit the beach, gen up first. On the southern coast are the cosmopolitan party beaches like Paradise and Super Paradise, which are busy day and night, whereas Órnos and Psaroú are great for families. To escape the crowds head along the northern coast to Ayia Ánna, Houlákia, Kápari, Agrári and Ayios Stéfanos.
Mykonos is renowned for its stylish boutiques and frenetic nightlife during the summer season. Often called the Ibiza of Greece, its party hot spots are teeming with beautiful people. Head to Chora and while away an afternoon shopping along glamorous Matoyánni Street, lined with brand name stores, charming cafés and stylish restaurants. In contrast, there are also many peaceful bays and anchorages as well as quiet rural villages. A must-do for every tourist is Little Venice, where medieval stone buildings were constructed right on the edge of the sea; their colourful wooden balconies overhang the water. The town has a romantic atmosphere, particularly at sunset. Order a cocktail in one of several welcoming restaurants and bars along the promenade.
