Insider guide
Venice
A city of immense historical importance and exquisite beauty, Venice is evergreen in popularity and a great location to visit during an eastern Italy yacht charter.
A huge draw for visitors, Venice remains highly popular for the diverse sights on display. Impressive and important buildings are ubiquitous, piazzas, walkways, ornate buildings and palaces at every turn are a spectacular sight. Visit lively St Mark's Square to soak up the atmosphere - flanked by St Mark's Basilica, the ornate Doge's Palace and the Torre dell'Orologio, this is the perfect place to start your tour of Venice. An important historic historic landmark, the Bridge of Sighs connects the Prigioni Nuove to the Doge's Palace. Legend states that as criminals were taken from the palace over the bridge, they'd cast a final glimpse back at Venice and sigh, considering their final punishment.
With hundreds of canals connecting the various islands making up the city, the largest and most famous is the Canale Grande. An important waterway for hundreds of years, it passes from one side of Venice to the other, with only four bridges spanning it. The canal is lined by over 170 buildings dating from as early as the 13th century and populated by consistently busy water traffic.
Art enthusiasts will enjoy the Gallerie dell'Accademia, hosting a fine collection of Renaissance masterpieces by artists such as Titian and Canaletto, while Murano is another island within the Venice district famed for glass blowing and glass products.
