Insider guide

Calvi

Calvi is a beautiful port town on the Mediterranean coast of Corsica. It is situated at the base of a large mountain, and has been an important trade centre for centuries.

A luxury yacht charter is the ideal way to fully appreciate the beauty of Calvi's magnificent setting. Framed by rising mountains topped with green forests, the sandy beaches line the arc of the bay, while colourful fishing boats bob in the palm-tree fringed marina. Ashore the meandering maze of cobbled streets packed with shops, cafes and restaurants offer delight for shoppers and coffee-lovers alike.

For those with a penchant for history, head up to the 15th century citadel and the Cathedrale St-Jean-Baptiste at the highest point. Soak up magnificent views of the red-tiled town and over the bay as the sun sets. During the busy summer months, Calvi is alive with the sound of music thanks to a series of festivals and concerts in the citadel and around the town - and on 15 August enjoy an impressive fireworks display aboard your superyacht charter offering breathtaking views of Calvi. With plenty to do in the area, nature lovers will enjoy a trip down the coast to the Scandola World Heritage Site, strewn with dramatic cliff formations and sea stacks, not to mention home to diverse marine life. Quai Landry links the marina and the port, and is a great place to get a feel for the town and watch the world go by. Past the promenade, lush la Pinède forest stretches along the back of the beach bordering Calvi bay, underlining the frontier between land and sea.

Calvi's 6km of glittering beach, simply oozes style of a French Riviera resort, offering gently shelving, warm, protected waters, ideal for families. With a fine array of waterfront restaurants, some of which serve directly onto the beach, visitors will never go hungry. Nearby Arinella Plage at Lumio is a small sandy stretch with stunning views across the bay to the citadel, this is an ideal bay to drop anchor to benefit from the shelter of rocky headlands and a popular spot to snorkel.
