Insider guide
Naples
Nestled in the Golfo di Napoli, resplendent in centuries of fascinating art and architecture, Naples is the place to enjoy an immersive experience of culture, history and cuisine. Wander the narrow winding streets lined with shops and cafes, explore must-see sights and soak up panoramic views of the bay.
This sun-drenched region in Campania certainly packs a punch, with a wealth of museums, galleries, castles and restaurants, all with equal appeal. A walking tour of old Naples is the ideal way to wander the open air markets, busy squares and narrow alleyways, offering a captivating feel of the beating heart of the city. Take in the architecture of the rounded turrets of Maschio Angioino Castle, waterfront Castle Dell'ovo and main hub of Piazza del Plebiscito, that have remained unchanged for generations,
History afficionados will appreciate a visit to the National Museum, one of the most important archaeological museums in Euorpe housing a superb collection of ancient art together with trasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Adventure-seekers may like to head 40m below Naples' historic centre in to the Napoli Sotterranea underground world of passageways. Originally created by the Greeks quarrying stone to build the city above, these passageways were subsequently used as tombs and then a cut through.
Before leaving Naples, try the most famous Neapolitan pizza - thinner in the centre so that the fresh tomato sauce soaks into the base, topped with mozzarella, fresh basil and drizzled with olive oil - this is a treat for your tastebuds.
