Insider guide
The Porquerolles
The three islands of the Porquerolles are renowned for their secret beaches and calm inlets. Turquoise waters, long sandy beaches and palm trees give them a desert island quality.
A world away from the hustle and bustle of the busy coastal towns of the Cote d’Azur, locals play pétanque in bougainvillea-clad squares, while visitors sip Pastis at small cafés and life moves at a slower pace.
The landscape of the Porquerolles is a medley of cliffs, bays, plains and forests, making the islands an perfect place to enjoy activities such as hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Of course, that’s once you have tired of basking on the bow, anchored off one of the many idyllic white sand beaches.
Vinophiles will enjoy a trip to Domaine Perzinsky, a family-run vineyard offering a wonderful selection of local Porquerolles wine, while sun-worshippers head to crescent-shaped Plage de Notre Dame, where the pearly sand is flanked by fragrant eucalyptus and pine trees whose exotic perfume is carried on the summer breeze. On Iles d’Hyères cars are not allowed so it has retained its natural beauty – bring comfortable shoes so that you can explore.
