An island blessed with fertile valleys dotted with olive groves and secluded coves fringed by sandy shores, sailing around the undulating coastline of Zakynthos is a real treat. The harbour capital is a major hub, centered around busy Solomos Square. Popular beaches such as Agios Nikolaos, Alykanas and Tsilivi offer great opportunities to enjoy leisurely swimming and water sports.
With an abundance of pine tree strewn hills, the contrasting golden beaches are found in the north, east and south. In the west the rocky landscape has a number of sea caves including the famous Blue Grotto Caves. When the sun shines in the afternoon, it creates patterns in every blue hue imaginable across the cave walls.
Smugglers Cove is renowned for the large wreck nestling in a golden bay, the remains of a shipwreck in 1980, the story allegedly involves the black market and smuggling. Only accessed by yacht, this is a popular tourist attraction, but really has to be seen. Zakynthos (or Zante) Town, the islands’ capital, is a busy port with great shopping and restaurants. Sit with a chilled frappe and watch the world go by.
