News Yacht Management: NURJA – Designed for all Weather

Ocean Independence is pleased to announce a unique new addition to the company’s yacht management fleet.

44m NURJA, formerly SILVER CLOUD, was built by reputable German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen as the world’s first luxury SWATH superyacht and sold to her current Owner by Ocean Independence. In addition to offering exceptionally spacious accommodation, the yacht’s design allows for complete comfort, even in rough seas.

A SWATH, short for Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull, is often confused with a catamaran but the concept is fundamentally different. Two torpedo-shaped hulls underneath the waterline are connected to a structure above the waterline, carrying the accommodation, whereby the ship’s cross-section near the surface area of the water line is extremely reduced, significantly limiting the movement of the vessel at sea in rough weather. Invented in 1938, the SWATH concept has primarily been used for navy, patrol and pilot vessels when a significant reduction of movement at sea is required.

As experts in the construction of SWATHs, Abeking & Rasmussen had the idea to apply same principle to recreational craft, and this exceptional yacht was delivered in 2008. Since launch, NURJA has cruised extensively around the world, visiting locations including North Alaska and the Galapagos Islands. In 2009, the yacht won the World Superyacht Award for Technology.

“NURJA is a truly unique vessel which offers rough sea handling characteristics like no other private yacht on the planet. Her stability in sea conditions which would keep 60 to 70 meters yachts in harbour is unparalleled. As a world cruiser she is the perfect platform”, says Captain Nicholas Williams, having just delivered the vessel from Antigua to Tenerife this February. The yacht’s extraordinary sea-keeping abilities were well proven on the final leg of this journey, when high winds were experienced off the Spanish coast.

Yacht Manager Nathaniel Cook adds, “My first impression of NURJA was her sheer volume.  Boasting expansive decks, extra wide salons, oversized galley and crew quarters, this vessel was clearly designed for comfort in all aspects.  There is nowhere on earth this vessel could not cruise, and in such comfort.  Due to her SWATH design, the stability and performance in poor sea conditions makes her truly unique.”

The Ocean Independence yacht management team have extensive experience in the operational management of every type and size of yacht. For more information on available yacht management services, please contact us or email management@ocyachts.com.
