The Ionian Islands
A fascinating Greek yacht charter destination, the twelve Ionian Islands scattered along the western coast were influenced by the occupation of the Venetians, British and French, and are a world apart from the rest of the country due to their unique cultural diversity, architecture and cuisine.
The pleasantly mild climate, deep waters (the deepest in the Mediterranean) and famous meltemia winds along with the soft, northwestern breeze, make the Ionian Islands perfect cruising grounds for a yacht charter. Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Paxos are six of the larger Ionian Islands, while Antipaxi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othoni, Meganisi and the uninhabited islets of Strofades complete the set of this stunning archipelago.
From Zakynthos in the south to Corfu in the north, chartering a yacht in Ionian Islands is a perfect way to experience lush green landscapes, with towering mountains at their spine and stunning horseshoe beaches fringing the water – ideal for windsurfing and diving. Although Ithaca lacks sandy beaches, it makes up for this through its importance in Greek mythology, as the home of Odysseus whose temple can be visited on the island. Featured in the best-selling novel and film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Kefalonia is the largest and perhaps the best known island in the region.
Less touristy, but offering up some of the most magical beaches, is low-key Lefkada. When the sun gets low, head inland to the mountain tavern, Panorama, in Athani. As the name suggests, the view alone makes it worth the journey, but they also serve an excellent selection of Greek classics. If the beaches in popular Paxos are too busy, anchor in one of the nearby quiet coves and enjoy the tranquillity on your luxury yacht. In Corfu Town, head to the lively local haunt, Tsipouradiko, located near the Old Port and visit the Moni Theotokou 13th century monastery, perched on the rocky promontory at the end of Paleokastritsa.
